Quickstart (5 minutes)
You don’t need a remote agent to get started — a2acli can run a local mock
agent for you. This golden path runs entirely on your machine, no auth required.
The loop: serve → discover → send
Section titled “The loop: serve → discover → send”-
Start a local echo agent. In one terminal (or background it with
&):Terminal window a2acli serve --echo --port 9001 -
Discover what it can do — fetch its AgentCard, skills, and security schemes:
Terminal window a2acli discover --service-url http://localhost:9001 -
Send it a message. By default
sendblocks until the task reaches a terminal (or interrupted) state and prints a single result:Terminal window a2acli send "Hello, agent!" --service-url http://localhost:9001
That’s the full loop: serve → discover → send. The echo agent simply returns your message, which is exactly what you want when learning the mechanics.
Stream live updates
Section titled “Stream live updates”Add --stream to follow updates as they arrive (JSONL when combined with
-o json):
a2acli send "Hello, agent!" --service-url http://localhost:9001 --streamGet a machine-readable result
Section titled “Get a machine-readable result”For scripts and AI agents, ask for a single JSON document instead of the interactive UI. Blocking is already the default, so no extra flag is needed:
a2acli send "Hello, agent!" --service-url http://localhost:9001 --output jsonWhere to next
Section titled “Where to next”- Direct-usage tutorial — the same loop in depth, plus tracking tasks, downloading artifacts, and graduating to a real (OAuth-protected) agent.
- Command reference — every command and flag, organized by the four A2A themes.
- Configuration & Auth — save named environments and log in to protected agents.
